Tomorrow marks a significant milestone for the United States of America, as we Americans celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday. Independence Day is celebrated across America as a time to show gratitude to God for the birth of our great nation. A nation defined by freedom.
The Declaration of Independence, which was used to declare independence from Great Britain, was signed by the new government of the United States in 1776, 250 years ago. Thomas Jefferson primarily authored the Declaration of Independence, and in the document, he explained with great clarity the reasons why the United States was seeking independence from Great Britain.
As we celebrate America’s existence for a quarter-millennium, let us thank God for all that America has accomplished in a relatively short period of time. We have become the most innovative, free, and prosperous nation on earth. Let us also look forward with great optimism to the next 250 years and beyond. If we truly remain “One Nation Under God,” God will continue to shower His blessings on us as a collective nation.
The Bible teaches that if a nation obeys the commands of God’s Word, then God will bless that nation. If a nation disobeys and neglects the commands of God’s Word, then God will withhold His blessings from that nation. This is why the Psalmist clearly articulates “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 33:12). The Hebrew word, “blessed” that is used in Psalm 33:12, can also be translated as “happy.” The idea here is that the nation whose God is the Lord is in a desirable position of delight and protection.
May future generations of Americans commit to living for the Lord, so that as a collective nation we are in a position to receive the blessings of God. Starting this Independence Day, may we as Americans follow the Lord once more and return as a nation to obeying His Word.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for our great nation, and we thank You for the tremendous blessings that You have poured out on us for 250 years. Lord, we pray that the generations to come will truly follow You, so that we may be defined as “One Nation Under God.” Father, thank You for the immense blessing of being able to live in a free country where we can freely worship and live for You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
