Recently, the Texas State Board of Education passed a new required reading list for more than 5 million students in public schools. Each grade level from elementary school to high school will have a list of texts that will be required reading during each grade level. This list includes Bible passages and stories, including Adam and Eve, the eight Beatitudes, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and more. Furthermore, there is required reading for students on historical figures and on our nation’s Founding Fathers.
Republicans hold a 9-4 majority on the board and the measures to require students to read the Bible passed along party lines. Julie Pickren, a member of the Texas Board of Education, explained that the required readings were voted on because they give the students “important insight into the moral and philosophical traditions that have shaped Western civilization.”
Dawn Hatley, a Lubbock resident who testified, said it very well, “When we teach classical literature and social studies with biblical foundations, we are not simply preserving great books. We’re helping raise young men and women who love truth, pursue wisdom and recognize God’s hand throughout history and human experience.”
This measure follows a federal appeals court ruling upholding a state law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public-school classroom throughout the Lone Star State. What a blessing that not only will every student in Texas see the Ten Commandments in their classrooms, but they will also read God’s Word. May this blueprint spread across America.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we thank You for the courage of the Texas State Board of Education in passing required reading for all public-school students to read the Bible and about Biblical stories. Lord, we pray that many more states will require public school students to read the Bible and understand how it has shaped our nation and Western civilization. Father, we praise You for Your Word that is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
