Asbury Seminary Dropped by UMC for Holding to Biblical Marriage

“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” – Jude 3

Since 1923, Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky has trained, educated, and prepared its students to effectively serve Christ and the Church. For the last 100 years, the seminary has graduated students who went on to serve the Lord faithfully as pastors, missionaries, church planters, teachers, professors, counselors, and more.

Asbury Theological Seminary is a multi-denominational, evangelical seminary that serves over 75 denominations and has roots in the Wesleyan tradition. The United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1981 officially added Asbury Theological Seminary to its List of Approved Theological Schools. Only people who graduate from schools on this list are deemed qualified for ordination in the UMC. Recently, however, the UMC announced that it removed Asbury Theological Seminary from this list.

The separation stems back to the 2024 General Conference of the UMC. During that conference, the UMC voted to officially embrace LGBTQ+ ideologies. In doing this, it separated itself from the Biblical, historic Christian teaching on human sexuality and gender. Asbury Theological Seminary, however, did not budge. They continued to hold fast to the Word of God. Because of this, the UMC removed Asbury Seminary from the denomination’s approved list of schools.

Asbury Seminary released a statement about being dropped in the UMC. This paragraph reflects their faithfulness well, “Our theological commitments, including our commitment to Scripture, remain unchanged. As an independent, multi-denominational seminary in the Wesleyan tradition, we have remained steadfast for more than a century in teaching the unchanging truth of orthodox Christianity. Our mission and values are the same today as they have been for more than a century.”

Praise God for Asbury’s faithfulness. As the UMC has distanced itself from Biblical Christianity, we should be grateful that Asbury Seminary is holding fast to God and His unchanging Word.

LET US PRAY…

Father, please continue to bless the work of Asbury Theological Seminary as the school remains committed to the Scriptures and historic Christianity. Lord, empower Your people to stand strong for You and Your truth that is found in the Scriptures, no matter the cost. Father, please unify Your Body, the church, and strengthen us to remain faithful to sound doctrine. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
