A Child Under Twelve is Euthanized in the Netherlands

“And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’” – Job 1:21

In 2002, the Netherlands pioneered legalized suicide for adults. The policy horrifically also allowed for infants less than a year old to be euthanized in certain circumstances. Children who were 12 years old and older could be euthanized with parental consent.

In 2024, this evil policy got worse. The Dutch government expanded its euthanasia policy to include children ages 1 to 12. Dutch officials claim this was necessary to address a small number of cases in which terminally ill children were experiencing “hopeless and unbearable suffering.”

According to the updated 2024 rules, children ages 1 to 12 may be euthanized if they are terminally ill, in intense suffering, have no path of improvement, and there is no reasonable treatment for them. The Dutch government recently released its 2025 annual report on the nation’s life-ending procedures. It devastatingly revealed that over 10,000 people were euthanized. What’s even more heartbreaking is that among those 10,000 euthanized was a child between the ages of 1 and 12. The intentional killing of an innocent adult is evil, but killing an innocent child is an unspeakable level of depravity. Sadly, this is what happens when a culture devalues life and glorifies death.

Americans cannot hide from this issue. Assisted suicide is on the rise in our country. This year, 3 states legalized assisted suicide, bringing the number of states with legalized assisted suicide to 13. These laws claim to be for terminally ill adults, but as we see in the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, and many other places, these laws tend to expand to legalize euthanasia and include mentally ill people and even children.

Life is a precious gift from God and because of that we must boldly and unapologetically defend the dignity of all human life. One way we do that is by helping and comforting people in the midst of their suffering instead of paying doctors to kill them.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we pray that the Dutch government will truly see the egregious atrocity it is that a child’s life under 12 years old was terminated and not given a chance at life. Lord, may the Dutch government change course on its euthanasia laws immediately. Lord, may our nation honor human life from the point of conception to natural death, as life is a blessing from You. Father, may legislators reject the spread of legal suicide in the United States. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
