50 pro-life leaders and organizations, including The Family Foundation, are calling on the new FDA Commissioner nominee, Dr. Heidi Overton, to commit to restoring the safeguards for the abortion drug, mifepristone. Ahead of Dr. Overton’s confirmation hearing before the Senate HELP Committee, the collection of pro-life leaders released a letter explaining why the safeguards need to be put back in place.
Many reasons are given in the letter. One is that the abortion drug is simply not safe. To highlight this fact, a recent study found that nearly 11% of women taking mifepristone have a serious “adverse event” within 45 days of taking it. Another reason is that the permissiveness of the current policy increases the risk of abuse, especially by men who seek to force women to have abortions without their consent or knowledge. Individuals can receive the abortion death pill through the mail without even seeing a doctor, and men can obtain these death pills by simply giving a woman’s name.
The last reason given in the letter is that mail-order abortion is undermining state laws enacted to protect unborn life and women, which is happening right here in Kentucky.
The letter explains that advocates for life and women have long desired to see the end of the Biden-era abortion by mail regime, which was specifically crafted to undermine the Dobbs decision. The letter also makes clear that it is time for Trump’s FDA to act decisively now. It has more than enough information to conclude the nearly two yearlong study of mifepristone that it has supposedly been conducting.
Dr. Overton and the FDA must do the right thing. Furthermore, it is time for the FDA to revoke the authorization of the abortion death pill altogether. “Medicine” that is designed to kill preborn babies should never have been approved to begin with.

Father, may this unified effort and letter encourage Dr. Heidi Overton to commit to restoring the safeguards for the abortion drug, mifepristone. Lord, empower the Trump Administration to act swiftly to protect women and the unborn from the deadly abortion drug. Father, strengthen Your people to continue moving forward in the battle to protect human life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
