Days ago, journalist James O’Keefe released an undercover video of the Washington Nationals’ Director of Community Relations, Sean Hudson. In this video, Hudson suggested that the team intentionally keeps one of the team’s pitchers, Trevor Williams, away from the spotlight. The reason for this public sidelining is nothing short of stunning and disturbing.
Williams was blacklisted by the Nationals simply because of his Christian faith. Hudson was caught on video describing Williams by saying, “He’s super Christian, Catholic,” all the while describing himself as “very far left leaning.” Hudson criticized Williams for publicly stating on X that he did not agree with the Dodgers’ decision in 2023 to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. In his tweet, Williams rightly said, “To invite and honor a group that makes a blatant and deeply offensive mockery of my religion, and the religion of over 4 million people in Los Angeles County alone, undermines the values of respect and inclusivity that should be upheld by any organization.”
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a drag group of LGBTQ men who dress up as half-naked nuns and dance sexually on crucifixes. Their organization, which has been publicly promoted by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, is explicitly blasphemous to the Christian faith.
Because of his strong public opposition to the disgusting event, Williams was barred from being used for promotional material. Hudson, referring to Williams, said in the video, “we don’t use him on social [media].” Even for fun promotional videos where they ask the team silly questions like, “‘[I]s a hot dog a sandwich?’ And, like, the players come up, you know what I mean? Like we don’t ask him.” Thankfully, Sean Hudson has been fired and the Washington Nationals released an official apology condemning such religious intolerance.
There is nothing more un-American than religious discrimination. Religious liberty is one of the founding principles of America. Baseball, especially as America’s pastime, should respect that right for its players. Let’s hope this situation will be used to protect professional athletes’ rights to freely express their religious views without fear of retribution.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for the courage of Trevor Williams and pray Your protection and blessings upon him. Lord, please use this disturbing situation for good. May this issue result in the strengthening of professional athletes’ right to religious expression. Father, empower believers all across our nation to stand courageously for Your truth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
