“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 15:57
In 2024, Kentuckians focused much of their attention on Amendment 2, which was a school choice constitutional amendment that the General Assembly placed on the November ballot. If it had passed, Amendment 2 would have updated the Kentucky Constitution to allow for more educational opportunities for families, students, and teachers.
As the 2024 election approached in Kentucky and the debate surrounding Amendment 2 intensified, the Pulaski County Public School District in Kentucky utilized its official website and social media pages to illegally advocate against Amendment 2. When Corey DeAngelis, the influential school choice advocate, publicly criticized this unlawful use of the school district’s resources, the district countered by deliberately attacking his First Amendment rights.
The school district, on its official Facebook page, started deleting comments, completely stopped public discussion, and ultimately blocked DeAngelis from its Facebook page. Responding to this blatant injustice, the Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit against the Pulaski County Public School District on behalf of DeAngelis in order to protect his First Amendment rights.
Thankfully, the school district recently settled the case, admitting that its actions were a clear violation of the First Amendment. This is a victory for our First Amendment rights that should be celebrated; however, it is also a significant reminder that there remains a tremendous amount of work to rein in government entities to make sure that they are not infringing on the rights of the people.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for this important victory for the First Amendment and for the courage of Corey DeAngelis. Lord, we are thankful for the incredible work of the Liberty Justice Center and for their strong defense of the First Amendment. Father, empower us to work fervently to always and in every way defend our precious rights. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
