There is a concerning anti-family bill that is, unfortunately, moving forward in the Kentucky House of Representatives. House Bill 109 was introduced by Rep. Stephanie Dietz (R-Kenton) in the House, and the bill would end the mandatory 60-day waiting period required for a divorce to become official in Kentucky when children are involved, in certain circumstances.

This highly important waiting period allows both husband and wife in a marriage to have the chance to reflect on the decision to file for divorce. Kentucky, with only a 60-day waiting period for divorces with children, already has among the most lenient and shortest in the nation of states with waiting periods. Many states have considerably longer waiting periods, and some research has shown that states with longer waiting periods have lower divorce rates.

The Family Foundation testified against the bill, explaining that this is not the right direction for Kentucky law on divorce. In our testimony we noted the numerous devastating impacts that divorce has on children, including: negative impacts on children’s learning capacity and education, increases in drug and alcohol abuse, violence and physical abuse, increases in behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric risks, including suicide, and even an astounding decrease in life expectancy
Sadly, on Thursday, February 5, HB 109 successfully passed the House Families and Committee chaired by Rep. Samara Heavrin (R-Leitchfield). Now, at any time, this harmful bill could receive a full House floor vote.

The institution of marriage has been greatly harmed here in our Commonwealth and across America due to the embrace of no-fault divorce, which has led to grave fiscal, societal, and human consequences. This bill needs to be defeated, as we do not need to make divorce even easier in Kentucky. Instead, true divorce reform in Kentucky must look to strengthen marriage and families, while ensuring children are protected. Kentuckians that want to see marriage strengthened and children protected must speak out on this bill.

For our “Let Us Pray” devotionals during the 2026 KY General Assembly, we will be taking time during the legislative session to encourage you to pray, by name, for our elected leaders (see below). Let us commit to praying regularly for our Kentucky governmental leaders to act in ways that bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ and are a blessing to our Commonwealth.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we pray that the Kentucky House will not further or provide traction for this anti-family bill. Lord, empower our state and nation to only promote and pass bills that will strengthen the institution of marriage. Father, we praise You for the gift of marriage and plead for Your help to honor this most foundational institution created by You for our good and for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Join us in praying for our elected leaders throughout  the 2026 Legislative Session!
