Let Us Pray: Commissioned to do Good Works

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

Believers in Christ have been commissioned by God to be deliberately involved in doing good works in the culture in which they live. Paul in his letter to the church at Ephesus wrote that we are, “created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”

Christians are called to do good works such as feed the hungry, clothe those in need, provide shelter for the homeless, influence their culture for righteousness, and more. Throughout the centuries, one can see the power of Christians rising up to do good works and how those acts of obedience brought about great change in the world.

Sadly, there are some areas of our culture where Christians are not engaged and thus are not performing good works. Some Christians in America today stay away from anything that could be viewed as political or policy-related for a wide range of reasons that unfortunately, keep them from doing good works in those very important arenas. Some of the reasons Christians stay away from these areas include wrong theology, an apathetic attitude, laziness, and a variety of other things.

One of the best ways, however, that one can do good in their culture for the Lord’s sake is through public policy, which determines the laws that we live under. Let us take advantage of our freedom to elect our leaders and influence the legislative system by performing good works in these sectors so that our culture may exemplify the righteousness of Christ.

LET US PRAY…

Father, empower us to fulfill our commission from You to do good works throughout our state, nation, and world. Lord, help us to take advantage of our freedom as Americans to do good works in electing righteous leaders and influencing God-honoring public policy. Father, may our lives truly bring You glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
