“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-2

On Saturday night, during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, tragedy was narrowly avoided thanks to the heroic actions of the United States Secret Service and law enforcement. During the event, a gunman ran through a security checkpoint, firing his weapon, as President Trump, Vice President Vance, and many of the President’s team sat in the room for the dinner.
A Secret Service member was shot, but thankfully, his bulletproof vest stopped the bullet. He courageously returned fire. The would-be assassin, Cole Tomas Allen, then fell to the ground where he was apprehended by the Secret Service.
Thankfully, the President, First Lady, Vice President, and cabinet members were escorted out of the room to safety. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said that Allen appeared to be targeting members of the Trump administration and potentially Trump himself.
Allen, before the shooting, had written a “manifesto” specifically stating that he wanted to target administration officials. According to law enforcement, Allen’s brother told them that he sent the writings to his family minutes before the shooting. Allen is facing multiple charges, including an attempted assassination of the President of the United States, which is a felony carrying a potential life sentence.
This incident shows how chaotic our political climate has become. President Trump has had three assassination attempts, more than any other American president. While many say this is because of mental illness, as Christians, we know this is more than a psychological problem. It is a spiritual problem. This is what happens when a society rejects God. Chaos ensues. And only the gospel of Jesus Christ can bring the healing this country desperately needs.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for protecting President Trump, the First Lady, and the President’s team from this gunman desiring to harm them. Lord, we are thankful for the courageous and quick actions from the Secret Service that avoided what would have been a great tragedy. Father, please bring unity, peace, and healing to our nation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
