A recent article from ProPublica deceptively suggested that pro-life laws were responsible for the increase in ectopic pregnancy deaths nationwide. However, National Review’s Jamie Bryan Hall has shown that isn’t the case. Instead, the rise in ectopic pregnancy deaths is most likely due to women being able to easily access the abortion death pill through the mail.
Hall’s research shows that both states with pro-life laws and states that allow abortion have experienced higher rates of ectopic pregnancy–related deaths due to the FDA’s removal of in person safeguards for abortion pills. Under the Biden Administration, the FDA permanently removed the in-person dispensing requirement, so women can now obtain the pills without ever seeing a doctor in person, getting an ultrasound, or visiting a pharmacy. Instead, the abortion pills can simply be delivered through the mail with little to no medical oversight. Sadly, the Trump Administration still has not repealed those Biden-era guidelines.
Pro-life laws are not the primary driver of the increase in ectopic pregnancy deaths. Instead, the rise is most likely due to women being able to easily access the abortion death pill. These life-threatening pregnancies are typically diagnosed through an in-person exam such as an ultrasound, which is no longer required to get the death pill.
This is happening all while the FDA approved mifepristone label clearly states that the pill must not be used in a confirmed or suspected ectopic pregnancy. This is yet another reason why the Trump Administration needs to take action now to stop the mail-order availability of these abortion death pills.

Lord, we praise You for the pro-life laws in place in states across our nation, protecting women and the unborn.
