Days ago, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that a historic settlement had been reached in the multistate lawsuit against Meta. The social media giant has agreed to pay up to $18 billion, of which Kentucky is expected to receive $358 million.
The settlement holds big tech accountable for its reckless use of platforms with addictive features used to hook young people, damaging their mental health. Another facet of the legal agreement is that Meta will integrate widespread safety features to protect children on Instagram and Facebook. The settlement resolves 48 other states’ claims made against Meta, though, notably, it still doesn’t require parental consent for children to use their platforms.
Kentucky Attorney General Coleman stated, “While Meta is certainly paying for its conduct, this was never just about the money. Kids deserve a childhood that isn’t measured in likes and followers. The online protections delivered by this settlement will bring a generational change that will make social media platforms safer for Kentucky families.” The proposed settlement is now awaiting court approval.
This settlement is a huge win for Kentucky families and children, as it will provide protection for them from predatory social media companies. This agreement should serve as a wake-up call for parents to be heavily involved in their children’s lives in order to protect them from dangers and harms posed by big tech.
It should also serve as a rallying cry for our state legislators. This settlement doesn’t mean the fight is over. META’s stipulations are only for 10 years, meaning after 10 years they no longer have to hold up their end of the bargain. If we want to see parents empowered and children protected online, then the General Assembly must pass legislation, like HB 227 by Rep. Matt Lockett that provides even stronger protections, including full parental consent, as well as codifying these regulations into law.

Father, we praise You for this settlement that will provide protection for Kentucky families and children from predatory social media companies. Lord, we praise You for the work of Kentucky AG Coleman and his team as they played an integral part in this settlement. Father, empower parents to be actively involved in their children’s lives so that they may protect them from social media dangers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
