For decades, in-person church attendance in the United States had been in steady decline. In-person worship attendance, unsurprisingly, hit an extreme low in the United States as the Covid-19 pandemic caused many to stop worshipping at public church gatherings altogether.

Five years since the Covid-19 disturbance, a new study has been released by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, in collaboration with Faith Communities Today called “Signs of Rebound Amid Uneven Recovery: The Changing Congregational Landscape.” It is the most comprehensive look yet at where congregations stand today.

The research examined 7,453 congregations across 79 denominations and faith traditions, and against the backdrop of 25 years, of data that comes from the Faith Communities Today (FACT) research. The numbers reveal that for the first time in 25 years there was a positive gain in in-person attendance at worship gatherings across America. Median in-person worship attendance has risen to 70, which surpasses pre-pandemic levels.

Other encouraging statistics from the study include that the median congregational income has increased, volunteers in the congregation have increased, and 58% of congregational leaders say that their congregation is stronger now than before the pandemic.

The report, however, also offers a “measured caution” from the findings, stating that the gains are “uneven.” The report states, “This is not a story of revival — it is a story of recalibration.” We should, however, be encouraged by this report. The fact is, more Americans are attending in-person church services today than at any time over the last 25 years. It is always a positive when believers fulfill the Biblical command to gather for worship. When Christians worship together they find encouragement and growth in the Lord to impact this world for Christ and His truth.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we praise You for this growth in worship gatherings across America. May it only continue to rise in the days, months, and years ahead. Lord, we pray that more and more American believers will routinely gather to worship You so that they will be empowered to live out the faith in our society. Father, we pray that the Gospel will spread throughout America and revival will come to our land. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
