“Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.” – Psalm 37:3
One of the monumental moments of the 2025 legislative session in Kentucky was the passage of House Bill 4 on March 28th, a bill that Rep. Jennifer Decker authored and The Family Foundation supported. This important bill requires all publicly funded universities in Kentucky to stop using state funds for DEI programs.
The law specifically bans and defunds discriminatory DEI programs in our public universities. Recently, the outworking of this good policy measure was witnessed as Western Kentucky University announced that it will no longer maintain the “Pride Center’s” status as a university-related initiative.
General Counsel for WKU, Andrea Anderson, announced at Tuesday’s Student Government Association meeting that, “The university cannot provide any resource, whether that’s human capital, or any type of monetary contribution or money that comes from the foundation or other sources to fund a DEI initiative.” The WKU Pride Center began in 2017 to support LGBTQ groups on campus and to promote LGBTQ activism, and now, due to House Bill 4 being enforced, the center will lose its campus office and the aid that the university was funneling to it.
The WKU Pride Center will now operate as a student-run organization, like all other ideological groups. Public universities should never use public funds to promote discriminatory or duplicitous worldviews and ideologies; rather, all public funds should be used for the advancement of real academics that lead to student growth. This is a situation that shows the power and effectiveness of good policy and why we should always advocate for God-honoring legislation as it plays out for the betterment of a society.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for the passage of House Bill 4 during this year’s legislative session here in Kentucky. Lord, we are thankful that WKU has come into compliance with House Bill 4 and has restricted all aid from the Pride Center. Father, may all public universities in Kentucky come into compliance with state law that bans and defunds discriminatory DEI programs in our public universities. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
