In a recent monumental ruling, the United States Supreme Court upheld parents’ God-given rights to direct the upbringing of their children. The case, Mirabelli v. Bonta, started in 2023, when two California teachers, Elizabeth Mirabelli and Lori Ann West, filed a lawsuit against California state laws and the Escondido Union School District. The school district’s policies forced educators to deliberately hide students’ “gender transitions” from their parents and use a student’s “preferred pronouns” while keeping the parents in the dark.
The lawsuit stated that California’s state laws and the school district’s policies violated the First Amendment, which safeguards religious freedom, and also the Fourteenth Amendment, which protects parental rights. U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez, in late 2025, granted a class-wide permanent injunction against the policies, claiming that they interfere with parents’ fundamental rights.
The injunction was then paused by the very liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals after the state appealed the prior ruling. But praise be to God, earlier this month, the Supreme Court reinstated the district court’s injunction, prohibiting the state from hiding gender transition information from parents, falsifying or maintaining two different sets of records, and forcing school employees to lie to parents.
Our nation’s High Court concluded that “the parents who object to the California policies on free exercise grounds are likely to succeed on the merits,” and that the “policies likely violate parents’ rights to direct the upbringing and education of their children.”
Make no mistake about it, this is a huge win for parental rights, as right now there are around forty other cases similar to this one playing out in federal courts. The Bible tasks parents with the authority and responsibility of raising their children and leading them in truth. This has never been the proper role of government and never will be, and thankfully, this decision supports that reality.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for this ruling by the Supreme Court that protects our religious freedoms and parental rights. Lord, we pray that similar cases, just like this one, that are playing out will uphold parental authority as well. Father, may our nation always keep parents in the driver’s seat as they raise their children, and never divert that responsibility to the government. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
