Let Us Pray: Supreme Court Asked to Overturn Obergefell

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24

In 2015, Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky, refused to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple because of her religious beliefs and was subsequently put in jail for six days due to her refusal. The same-sex couple whom Davis denied a marriage license sued her, and in 2023, a jury found that Davis should pay them $100,000 in damages.

Then, to dig in even more, the same-sex couple sought a payment from Davis for the fees and expenses for their attorneys. In 2024, U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning ruled that Davis must pay the fees and costs because the same-sex couple prevailed in their lawsuit. The judge ordered that Davis must pay a total of $260,104 in fees and expenses to attorneys who represented the same-sex couple.

Attorneys for Davis from Liberty Counsel then appealed the judge’s ruling to try to reverse the order to pay more than $300,000 to the same-sex couple, and in hopes of the case reaching the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v Hodges. In addition, in June, the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, at its annual meeting voted to formally request the Supreme Court overturn the Obergefell v Hodges decision that “legalized” same sex “marriage.”

Recently, Liberty Counsel appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking them to overturn Obergefell. While there may be a low chance this case results in the Supreme Court overturning Obergefell, it has started a national conversation about the future prospects of eliminating the invented right to same-sex “marriage” and returning marriage to its Biblical foundation, exclusively between one man and one woman. We hope and pray that the Supreme Court will one day reverse the misguided decision.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we pray that the U.S. Supreme Court will have the courage to consider a case that reconsiders their misguided decision in Obergefell v Hodges that “legalized” same-sex “marriage.” Lord, please bless Kim Davis and her attorneys as they continue to courageously defend the truth of marriage being between one man and one woman. Father, empower our leaders to push for a return to Biblical marriage here in Kentucky and across the United States. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
