Sports Betting Becomes Legal in Kentucky

“Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live.” – Proverbs 15:27

On March 30, 2023, regrettably, the Kentucky General Assembly by a razor-thin margin passed House Bill 155. On March 31, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear signed House Bill 155 which legalizes sports betting in the Commonwealth.

Earlier this month, on September 7th, in retail gambling locations sports betting was legalized. Later this month, on September 28th, online sports betting options will become legal in Kentucky.

Since the passage of the legalization of sports betting in the Commonwealth, our nation has witnessed a wave of improprieties and scandals accompanying sports betting. Not long ago, issues related to sports betting literally rocked two prominent universities in Iowa, the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. Sports betting has also caused chaos to flame up at the University of Alabama and in professional athletics in the not-too-distant past.

With the legalization of sports betting in Kentucky we must brace ourselves for the harm that it will inevitably bring. The damage that sports betting will bring to the Commonwealth will be multifaceted which will include increased addiction, corruption, social costs, and deceitfulness in sports.

LET US PRAY…
Father, help our nation to have Your wisdom and see gambling as a waste of our resources that ultimately You have provided for us. Lord, empower Your people here in Kentucky to remain strong in standing against gambling in all its forms. Father, may our Commonwealth as a collective whole reject sports betting and the harms that accompany it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
