“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” – Romans 11:33
The New York Times and a multitude of other news outlets have spent a considerable amount of time and exerted a notable amount of energy covering a story centering on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and the Pentagon. So, what was the explosive event that had to be covered and portrayed by various media organizations in such a scandalous way?
It was a prayer service at the Pentagon just days ago on the morning of May 21st, called the “Secretary of Defense Christian Prayer & Worship Service.” Attendance of the service was completely voluntary; however, the 30-minute service was so well attended that it became standing-room only.
Some have criticized the event by ridiculously claiming that it is an establishment of a “state religion” and a violation of the Establishment Cause. Throughout American history, our leaders such as President Washington, President Lincoln, and others have sought the wisdom and help of Almighty God just as Secretary Hegseth did at the Pentagon prayer service, and in no way is that an attempt to establish a “state religion.”
In actuality, this is just an instance of Secretary Hegseth and other leaders at the Pentagon exercising their First Amendment rights. In the service, Secretary Hegseth said, “This is precisely where I need to be, and I think exactly where we need to be as a nation, at this moment, in prayer, on bended knee recognizing the providence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
He could not be more right. As a nation right now we need to be on a bended knee seeking the wisdom, understanding, and providence of King Jesus. May services like this one continue to take place at the highest levels of our government so that our leaders may be led by God’s wisdom.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we praise You for the boldness and courage of Secretary Pete Hegseth in hosting this prayer service to You at the Pentagon. Lord, we pray that all of our nation’s leaders will seek Your face for wisdom, guidance, and direction as they lead our country. Father, thank You for leaders who publicly display a Christian witness as they lead. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
