A tragic story from Spain is a grim warning for the United States. The story centers on Noelia Castillo, who was only 25 years old. Since Castillo was a teenager, she struggled deeply with psychological illness and endured horrendous difficulties, including sexual assault.

Sadly, she attempted suicide twice. The second time she tried to end her life was in 2022 when she jumped off of a five-story building. This left her paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. Due to her constant psychological distress and physical pain, Castillo made it clear that she wanted to take advantage of legislation that was passed in 2021, which legalized government-sponsored assisted suicide. In an interview with a Spanish TV show Castillo stated, “I want to go now and stop suffering, period. None of my family is in favor of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I’ve suffered during all these years?”

In 2024, Castillo officially sought euthanasia with an independent group in Catalonia made up of doctors, lawyers, and bioethicists. They studied Spain’s euthanasia law to determine if Castillo was an eligible candidate. Heartbreakingly, the body in Catalonia approved Castillo’s request for assisted suicide. Castillo’s family was against her desire for euthanasia and disagreed with Catalonia’s decision to approve her request, leading to Castillo’s father fighting the decision in court.

The case eventually made it to Spain’s Supreme Court, and unfortunately, in January of this year, the court upheld Castillo’s approval for euthanasia. Days ago, Castillo received voluntary euthanasia. Her family spoke with her half an hour before it happened to try and stop her, but she refused. She was put to death at a healthcare location in Barcelona, Spain.

It must be noted that Castillo was euthanized not because of a terminal illness. She was euthanized because she wanted to die. At twenty-five years old, Castillo still had decades to find real help and live a fruitful life. But that isn’t possible now.

This gut-wrenching story should serve as a wake-up call to the United States, where assisted suicide is legal in 13 states. The Kentucky General Assembly has had the opportunity to protect Kentuckians from illegally trafficked death pills to assist in suicide and in abortion by passing HB 646, but to date, has not moved this important pro-life bill forward.

LET US PRAY…

Father, please comfort Noelia Castillo’s family, who are grieving the tragic loss of their loved one to euthanasia. Lord, empower Your people here in Kentucky and in the United States to stand strong against the culture of death and assisted suicide laws in every way possible. Father, may the KY General Assembly pass HB 646 to protect Kentuckians from illegally trafficked death pills that aid in assisted suicide. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
