The 1960s and 1970s brought about cultural revolutions that distanced Americans from both religion and marriage. These revolutions portrayed the institutions of marriage and religion as hindrances to self-actualization, equality, freedom, and happiness. The consequences have been grave: church attendance has declined greatly, and the marriage rate has plummeted.
Furthermore, the digital revolution that America has experienced over the last 15 years has left Americans increasingly isolated and less socially connected, leading to dissatisfaction in life. In recent years, studies have revealed a massive decline in daily in-person conversation, teen socializing, face-to-face community life, and even sex.
A recent Institute for Family Studies (IFS) report titled “The Devout Difference: Religion, Marital Quality, and Sex Among Americans” found that married couples who practice their Christian faith and regularly attend church services are happier, divorce less often, and experience more satisfying intimacy than their secular peers.
The study states, “Christian couples are happier. Married men and women who most fully embrace the classic beliefs and practices of Protestant and Catholic Christianity—including the conviction that marriage is a lifelong commitment, “till death do us part”—enjoy the happiest marriages in America.”
The study revealed that the “beliefs, behaviors, and belonging” connected with regular religious attendance are linked to higher-quality marriages. The report stated, “This churchgoing advantage is evident for both Catholics and Protestants.” This study once again affirms what the Bible has always taught: God’s wisdom is far greater than the world’s wisdom. God created the institutions of the church and marriage for our good and flourishing. They are not roadblocks to happiness but pathways to it.
LET US PRAY…
Father, thank You for creating the institutions of the church and marriage for our good and flourishing. Lord, please empower our nation to see the fulfillment and joy that is found in faithfully attending church and in marriage. Father, may we always seek Your wisdom instead of the world’s wisdom, as it is always much greater. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
