“And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’” – Job 1:21
In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation called “MAID,” which stands for Medical Assistance in Dying. This legislation legalized physician-assisted suicide, or what is sometimes referred to as euthanasia, death with dignity, mercy killing, and more.
However, while the culture of death attempts to couch the practice of ending one’s life in a medical context; the reality is that this law legalized suicide with the help of a physician. When MAID was passed by the Canadian Parliament, it was put into effect to be “an open-ended medical experiment.” Legalized suicide is no “medical experiment” as physicians have been sworn to uphold the age-old ethical rule of “do no harm,” and aiding in the killing of human life is the absolute opposite of not harming someone.
Since 2016, when MAID was passed, the reality being played out is nothing short of gut-wrenching as Canadians are committing suicide at startling rates under the guise of euthanasia. Recently, in the September issue of The Atlantic magazine, staff writer Elaina Plott Calabro wrote a fifteen-page research article on MAID’s program, and her investigation reveals that literally, “Canada is Killing Itself,” which is the article’s title.
As of 2023, there have been 60,300 Canadians who have committed legalized suicide, and in the province of Quebec, legalized suicide accounts for 7% of all Canadian deaths. MAID now accounts for around one in twenty deaths in Canada, which is more than Alzheimer’s and diabetes combined. Here in the United States, we must get in front of this issue and make sure that legalized suicide does not spread.
From the Christian perspective, believers must clearly understand that we are Biblically commanded to be pro-life from the point of conception to the point of natural death. God alone has the ability to give life, and God alone has the ability to take life. Scripturally, it is abundantly clear that only God has the authority to decide when one’s earthly life is over. Let us uphold this truth, that the Sovereign God over all things has the perfect wisdom alone to decide how many days our lives are to be, and that we should live them out faithfully until He calls us home.
LET US PRAY…
Father, may the tragic suicides that are taking place in Canada be stopped legislatively, as the nation is literally killing itself. Lord, please open the eyes of the Canadian Parliament to see the evil nature of killing oneself. Father, may legislators reject the spread of legal suicide in the United States. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
