HB 1 Veto Override is a Win for Kentucky Students says The Family Foundation

Win for Kentucky Students! The Family Foundation Applauds the General Assembly’s Override of Gov. Beshear’s Veto of HB 1

FRANKFORT, KY – The Family Foundation applauds the General Assembly for overriding the veto of HB 1 by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. HB 1 opts Kentucky into the new federal education tax credit program created by Congress in H.R. 1 that passed last year. This tax credit program allows taxpayers to donate money to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) in exchange for a federal tax credit up to $1,700. These SGOs can give scholarships to students in public schools or non-public schools, ensuring that all students benefit from this program that provides financial assistance and more choice in education.

The Family Foundation applauds the Kentucky House and Senate for overriding Beshear’s veto of the bill. The Senate voted 31-5 today to override, following the House voting to override yesterday by a vote of 77-14-1.

Statement from David Walls, Executive Director of The Family Foundation:

The final passage of HB 1 by the General Assembly is a huge win for all Kentucky students. This program will give Kentucky students more resources to further their education regardless of where they go to school, a victory for educational freedom and parental rights.

“This new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program exists to give more choice and opportunity to students across the country. If the governor and teacher’s unions had their way, Kentucky students would miss out on money that students in other states have access to. Thankfully, the General Assembly chose to stand with Kentucky families and students over ideology. With the final passage of HB 1, Kentucky students are better off and will have more educational opportunities moving forward,” Walls concluded.
