Earlier this year, former Finnish Parliament member, Päivi Räsänen, was found guilty of “hate speech” by the Finnish Supreme Court. Her “crime” was authoring a 2004 church pamphlet explaining the Christian view of marriage and human sexuality.
Because of this, she had to pay a fine and all copies of the pamphlet were destroyed. This is clear persecution, but sadly, it doesn’t stop here. Rasanen recently found out that her persecution has become international as she is now banned from the United Kingdom.
Räsänen spoke at a conference in California and was planning to fly back to Finland. Her flight had a layover in the U.K. Doing so requires an electronic travel authorization (ETA). Her application for an ETA was initially accepted. However, while at the conference in California, Räsänen was notified that her ETA had been cancelled.
In response to the ETA cancellation, Räsänen said, “The Supreme Court’s closely divided ruling has had unexpected consequences. In addition to restricting freedom of expression, it has also created restrictions and difficulties related to travel and participation in meetings and conferences.” The erroneous ruling from the Finnish Supreme Court in Räsänen’s case has bled over to other European countries.
It should be noted that both Finland and the United Kingdom claim to have freedom of religion for their citizens. As Americans, this situation is a reminder that freedoms need to be fought for and maintained.
Let’s not forget that just recently the city of Louisville was ordered to pay $800,000 to Chelsey Nelson for violating her religious freedom. Thankfully, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky upheld Nelson’s right. But all it takes to lose that right, is to elect people who disregard the Constitution. Rasanen’s story proves that point. Finland’s Constitution and United Kingdom’s laws may ensure freedom of religion, but their leaders do not.

Father, please strengthen and bless Räsänen as she courageously continues to stand for Your truth. Lord, may the European nations cease from attacking faithful Christians. Father, help us to remain faithful to You when we face moments and seasons of persecution for righteousness’ sake. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
