Man on the Street Interviews: Should we “Let the People Decide?”

Dr. Hershael York, Pastor of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort and former President of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, has been in the news in recent weeks.  First, on Jan. 17 he raised eyebrows when he boldly prayed for Kentucky’s legislators before the Governor’s budget address (See second video below). More recently he has raised ethics questions regarding legislators who push expanded gambling but they themselves are deeply tied to the horse industry—those which personally stand to benefit if gambling is passed.

The Family Foundation caught up with Dr. York recently to capture his concern and perspective over the Governor’s focus to expand gambling.

In the video below, Dr. York answers the following questions:

  • Why are you opposed to expanded gambling?
  • Have you personally experienced how gambling can destroy people?
  • Why ought Christians be opposed to expanded gambling?
  • Why should Christians be opposed to expanded gambling?
  • What would you say to legislators who claim to be Christian that are tempted to vote in favor of expanded gambling?

In this video, Dr. York answers the following questions:

  • What’s at stake in Kentucky’s decision to accept expanded gambling?
  • Why is this not a ‘Let the people decide’ issue for Kentucky?
  • If there’s a message you’d like to send to legislators & our Governor on the gambling issue, what would it be?

Below is Martin Cothran’s response to the Governor’s February 14, 2012 press conference where he released the details of his gambling amendment.

Below is video of Dr. York’s prayer before the Legislature on January 17, 2012.
